La Folia (in progress) is a 32-hour treatment of Corelli’s “La Folia” scored for pre-recorded sounds, live electronics, and optional live performers. Derived from existing recordings, the 16-measure theme is time-stretched and manipulated while retaining the same basic structure of the original (each measure lasts two hours). In short, the manipulated recording serves as a foundation for the larger composition. A drone-based electronic part will be improvised on on top of this ground and optional live performers may perform composed cells based on the spectral content of harmonies that define certain structural landmarks. This piece is inspired by and dedicated to my wife, bassoonist Stephanie Corwin, who, through her work in historic performance, has played numerous versions of “La Folia.”
